Our Story
Love for the sport-
I fell in love with the sport of fly fishing back in 2014 when i received my first fly rod combo in the mail. After spending about 2 weeks learning how to ( barely ) cast in my backyard i decided to start fishing the nearby lakes and canals, being born in Miami Florida these are abundant in my area. I was still very unfamiliar with a few things like fly retrieval, presentation and why the reels on these rods seemed useless to me. This was at the time somewhat of a learning curve for me being that i have always been an offshore fisherman and i was adapted to heavy tackle, big rods and reels. Fly fishing seemed to be almost the opposite of the fishing i was used to. But the more hours i spent each day at the lakes and canals learning the techniques and getting better at casting, the more and more i found myself enjoying this almost therapeutic way of fishing.
It was when i finally hooked my first fish where i realized the true beauty of this “primitive” way of fishing. The feeling of hooking a large mouth bass with tiny flies made of feathers and hair, that connection i felt hooking these fish as i watched them gracefully come up and slurp these flies off the surface of the water. Followed by a long strip of line for a hookset, retriving line with my hands as im bringing in the fish. Feeling every headshake and kicking of the tail right at the ends of my fingers as hes trying to get away. Smiling from ear to ear, this little moment was enough to keep me coming back for more and ultimately more moments like these is what got me hooked into fly fishing. Since than i continue to fly fish and my love for it keeps growing.
Passion for the flies-
As time went on and i fly fished more and more i found myself needing flies as i kept loosing them to trees, toothy fish, or they would just break apart after catching a few fish. It was begining to get expensive as the flies i was buying either online or from sporting goods stores weren’t holding up aslong as i had hoped and seemed overpriced. Once again falling apart or getting torn up very easily with just a few fish. This is the point in time where i began to make my own flies. My first flies were tied by hand with no vice whatsoever, using everyday materials like sewing string as thread, nylon rope strands as a body wrap and duck feathers i found at the lakes to form tails. The hooks i used were generally cheap longshank panfish hooks or small live bait hooks. These materials combined became excellent minnow patterns and proved to be extremely durable flies. To this day i still have some of these flies around, even after catching well over a dozen fish with them.
As i continued to fly fish i also continued tying flies as i became more intrigued by the art of fly tying. I enjoyed matching the colors and patterns of my flies to the local baitfish and making the flies as realistic as possible, always using feathers as tails on almost all my baitfish patterns as not only did it make the fly look more realistic but it gave them movement and a subtle action underwater, making them extremely effective and succesful.
It was until i began purchasing actual fly tying materials and tools where i really started growing my passion for flytying. My imagination was only limited by the materials available at the time and the tools which helped me put these patterns together. I thought of it as an excellent way to express my creativity and craftsmanship into life-like fish catching lures and found myself tying flies more than actually fishing at some points.
Fast forwarding to now, my passion for tying continues to grow and as i look back to those first minnow patterns i made years ago i can see that i have come a long way, i still strive to tie unique, realistic and durable flies as i am essentially in competition with myself always pushing to tie a new fly better than the last one. This ofcourse involves time as i test different materials, hooks, threads, adhesives etc. Let alone casting the flies, and fishing them. I do this for all my flies tied, yes every individual fly i crank out is individually tested. As crazy and time consuming that sounds, this is my form of quality control and its the extra time and steps i take to ensure quality on all my flies.
